Victorian conservatories are so called as they take their style from the Victorian era which was so named because Victoria was the Queen at this time. The Victorians are credited with many innovations in building styles and techniques with many of their structures still in use today. Conservatory buildings were predominately made of many panes of glass with a skeleton like frame structure resulting in the maximum amount of light being let in. The use of wrought iron allowed the Victorians to build large structures and they did so on a grand scale with buildings like the Crystal Palace below showing.

Because wrought iron was heavy and difficult to use in some projects they used iron posts which were encased within oak to make building faster and buildings lighter. Today we have the advantage of modern materials and building techniques which allow us a large choice when designing conservatories. The Victorian style of conservatory design is very popular with many people opting for it when extending their homes or building a garden structure. The three most popular materials used in building conservatories of this type are.

Wood – A popular choice giving a natural blend onto most buildings with a range of woods and stains. These can be plain or elaborately carved depending on what you want making wooden conservatories flexible in design and  natural in finish.

Plastic – A cheap and fast way to build a conservatory with the added bonus that plastic does not rot or corrode. UPVC conservatory products are growing rapidly in popularity.

Edwardian Conservatory

These conservatories are based on the designs of Edwardian homes from that long past era. The Edwardian’s had a much more simplistic approach to design than the Victorians preferring to build in rectangular and square shapes. Their designs would normally have no arched surfaces and use of any angle other than a right angle(90degrees) was very rare. High roofs are a feature of these structures and this particular feature originates from the game of Croquet which was played indoors during bad weather by the wealthy who had conservatories built to accommodate this game. These design features give an Edwardian design two main advantages over a Victorian style conservatory.

Space – Because only square and rectangular shapes are used in their design the actual floor space of these structures is maximized giving you plenty of space. The high roofs also increase the available space especially for high standing ornaments, plants or furniture. A good tip if you have a high roof is to have it made with heat reflecting double glazed glass this avoids excessive heat loss.

Conservatories Prices - Having a more simplistic design means the time for designing is less and the actual manufacture and construction will be easier and therefore cheaper.

Lean To Conservatories

First let’s ask the question which a lot of people are unsure of.
What is meant by the term a lean to conservatory?

Lean to conservatories have two distinct properties that put them in the category of lean to structures and they must have both these qualities which are as follows.

1. One of the long sides of the conservatory will be the side of the house with an entrance into the conservatory another door to the outside is optional in this type of conservatory design although very common.

2. Their is no apex type roof it is flat and can be level or tilted with the higher side towards the house. The roofs are quite often constructed of plastic material which is not completely transparent although having a completely Glass conservatory is an option. They can also be thick and non transparent with light only admitted through the side.

They are often called sun lounges and are very popular with homes that have a small amount of garden space and also for buildings with low eaves such as Bungalows and Cottages. There are many applications that a lean to can be used for other than a sun lounge such as a room extension for a Dining or Kitchen area. A plant area for an avid Gardner or even a kids play area.
